Justifying the purchase of a new hybrid automobile

Posted by Scott on May 26, 2008

I’m writing this entry because my wife and I have discussed the pros and cons of selling (or trading in) our minivan for a new hybrid automobile.  In west Tennessee, paying $3.85 a gallon for regular blend fuel in late May 2008 has made our minds wander towards "can we do better"?

Why do it? There is nothing mechanically or cosmetically wrong with our 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan.  It hasn’t been wrecked, it has less than 80k on the odometer, it’s very easy to drive and it’s less than 10 years old. We both live relatively close to our places of work, we carpool together 3 out of 5 days a week, so we buy about two tanks of gas per month; roughly 80 gallons consumed each month.

In early April, we enjoyed a trip to San Diego where we rented a white Toyota Prius and drove up and down the coast and along many of the streets to around town destinations. The Prius is a very nice hybrid automobile with a great suspension and decent go performance. The interior’s plastic might not live up to previous experiences with Toyota interiors; the plastics seemed a bit flimsy and cheap. In early April San Diego’s regular fuel blend prices were $3.85 - $3.95 a gallon.

For us, it doesn’t make any monetary sense to trade right now or for the foreseeable future. The potential fuel economy savings from purchasing a hybrid, like a Toyota Prius, would be offset by a car payment in our monthly budget and possibly higher insurance premiums each month. New car dealers aren’t going to be wheeling and dealing on the prices for their small car inventories either. I expect many dealers will be instituting a "limited availability" tax on every small, high MPG automobile on their new car lots.
